Florida Governor Charlie Crist was elected in 2006 as a Republican with 52% of the vote statewide (38% in PBC) and had been a popular governor. When he ran behind in the polls against Marco Rubio in the Senate primary, he repudiated his Republican roots and became independent, causing a precipitous drop in his popularity.
